1-Turn Down Music
If you've got a commute, one way you probably get through it is to crank up some favorite tunes during your drive. However, depending on how long your commute is, the volume you use can be detrimental to your ears. You may not realize it, but the volume could be much louder than you believe it is. Instead, ensure the volume is down a bit more than you're used to each time you start to play music.
The trend these days is to slip a pair of tiny hearing buds into each ear when you're out jogging or riding public transportation. However, while buds are easy to carry around in pockets or your hands, they aren't so great for hearing over time. Without the ears being securely covered, anything you hear through buds will be distorted by some level of external sound. You may fight this by raising the volume, and that is worse for your ears. Instead, consider full-sized headphones that will completely encapsulate the ears. Volume can then be much much lower.
Whenever you anticipate loud, continuous sounds, such as a construction worksite, industrial facility or popular concert, bring earplugs. Plugs will block some sound; you can still enjoy and remain alert to everything happening, but you don't have to worry about auditory damage at the same time.
4-Keep Magnesium Up
Some evidence points to the ability of magnesium to preserve hearing. Magnesium, a common mineral found in foods or supplemented via tablets, can serve as a daily defense against hearing loss or problems. Foods like almonds and spinach have magnesium, and most drugstores carry the mineral as well. Of course, your doctor should know about any supplementation you're planning; its possible magnesium could affect some medications you're taking for other health issues. Your physician may also order blood tests to assess existing magnesium levels.
